Changes on the way, enjoy Thursdays weather! It seems Ive talked about our upcoming weather changes forever and finally I can say its almost here. There are actually 2 systems that will usher in these changes over the next several days beginning with: Storm #1 now over Texas that will push east over the next couple of days spreading what initially appears to be rain into the area Friday. As colder air in behind the storm pushes south well likely see a change over to all snow late Friday into early Saturday. Two very important things to take into account is the eventual track of the storm which will ultimately determine how much we receive and secondly how much cold air there is present to change it over to snow before moisture moves on east. My data Ive collected over the years shows a perfect track for a significant snow event would take it across north Georgia between Chattanooga and Atlanta and then curving northeast across the Carolinas. In this case your looking at a snow event locally in the 4 to 8 inch range. With that said its looking at the moment the storm will remain a bit further south before making the curve to the northeast which will likely drop local totals to the 1 to 3 inch range across northeast Tennessee and a bit more over southwest Virginia and the higher elevations. Without dodging the obvious question of how much I always say the eventual storm track and how much cold air there is present to work with determines everything. Never in the best conditions is it a easy call! Late on Sunday storm # 2 arrives. This system will drop southeast out of Canada and heads toward the mid Atlantic coast states. This storm will have more cold air to work with than storm # 1 so I expect as of this posting to see our next round of snow arriving Sunday night into early Monday. Way to early to accurately predict amounts but typically these lay down a couple of inches or so depending on its speed. These two systems will usher in a slow but steady downward trend in temperatures heading into next week from this weeks 50s to next weeks averages in the 30s and overnight lows in the 10s and 20s. Looking ahead.....this drop in temperatures will likely continue into early February with another surge of cold Arctic air arriving by next weekend and an active storm track that may turn this so far uneventful winter into one to be remembered yet! Ill continue to keep an eye on things as they develop for good or for bad! Thx. RS
