Channapatna (Pincode-562160), located at 12.65°N 77.22°E, an average elevation of 739 metres or 2424 ft above Msl, is a small town located 60 km south-west of Bangalore, on Bangalore-Mysore state highway (sh17)It is the taluk headquarters under the jurisdiction of the Ramanagaram district. The town is famous for its toys and lacquer ware. Channapatna toys are a particular form of wooden toys made out of lacquering the wood of the Wrightia tinctoria tree, locally called Aale mara (ivory-wood). Origin of this toys craft can be traced to the reign of Tipu Sultan who invited artisans from Persia to train the local artisans. Manufacturing and twisting of raw silk and Coconut fiber is a major industry of Channapatna taluk. In early 1873, Channapatna was the sub-taluk under Closepet (Ramanagaram) and in 1892 it was made a centre of full-fledged taluk and Closepet became a sub-taluk under Channapatna;Tamil inscription found on the tank sluice of Ramannanakere dates back to 1100 A.D. Inscription at Krishnapura dt. 1387A.D. refers to Channapattana Rajya. Gangas, Cholas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara rulers had held sway over this area. During the period of the Vijayanagara Empire, Jagadevaraya and his family (of Telugu Banajiga community)ruled the territory of Baramahal(the word Baramahal is variously interpreted as Twelve Palaces and Twelve Districts. The latter is the more probable meaning, for by popular tradition Jagadevaraya, who is believed to have had twelve sons, assigned to them the twelve administrative divisions, and Colonel Miles, in his History of Hydurnaik, speaks of the Baramahal as the-Twelve Parganas. The Rayas sons may be mythical, but the tradition of the division of the country into twelve administrative divisions seems acceptable history. this may be a pointer derivative of the Bara-baluti system or the Ayagar system; perhaps the proginetor of the atara-katcheri). It is an extensive basin, intermediate between the Mysore table-land and the plains. Roughly, it comprises the Taluks of Dharmapuri, Uttangeri, the greater part of Krishnagiri, and portions of Hosur and Denkanokota, all of them are now in Tamil Nadu. Up to 1808, Kangundi in Chittor District- AP, was part of Baramahal), along with Mysore. peda Jagadevaraya, immadi Jagadevaraya,Ankusaraya, kumara Jagadevaraya, Immadi Ankusaraya were some of the notable members in this line. Rajaudayar of Mysore, captured Seringapatam in 1610 and put an end to the imperial viceroyalty with the ambition of gaining independence from the Empire. His grandson, Chamarajaudayar, achieved the conquest of the Chennapatna governorship, without the Baramahals.
