Chapois or Chapoy? Chapois or Chapoy (shapoa or tcha-poi) PRONUNCIATION The name Chapoy is in many countries like Canada, France, Mexico, Switzerland, and in the United States, etc., but our ancestors originated in France. So, how do you pronounce our name? In French, Chapoy is prounounced shapoa. In English and Spanish, the name is pronounced tcha-poi. When the Chapoys came to the United States and to Mexico, they pronounced the name as an anglophone sound tcha-poi in stead of shapoa which is how the rest of the Chapoys around the world pronounce our name. Chapoy used to be indifferently written as Chapoy or Chapois but in French ois and oy are the same sound. SPELLING French spelling was progressively modernized. So, we find the spelling of Chapoy but we also find the spelling of Chapois. The spelling changed for all words, not just for our name. During the 18th century between the French Revolution in 1789 and the First French Empire of Napoleon the 1st (1804-1814) the two orthographs (or spellings) were being used. We know that during a period both spellings were used at the same time, even in the same documents, particularly between 1804 and 1808. As told in the first edition of the CHAPOY NEWS, in the 18th century, the s at the end of the word was written very long with a downward curving tail, so the letters is looked like a y and Chapois was then written as Chapoy. *this was written in Sannois, France in June 2003 by Bonita Honhorst, Paul Chapoy and Yves Chapoy
