Chapter twenty six of: CHILDREN OF THE DUST While Charles hurried down the street toward the Doctors office, Hilda, Abby and Donna Mae practically carried Catherine up the stairs to her room. Sassafras tea ! Hilda exclaimed. Now go Abby ! and be quick about it ! she ordered. Between the rest periods of the labor pains, Catherine noticed Lester and Ruby standing in the doorway clinging tightly to each other with a look of fear and desperation on their faces. Come here you two ! Catherine bid, stretching out her arms to them. They didnt hesitate to come running over and cuddle up in Catherines open arms. Whats wrong ? they asked.. Please dont be sick ! Ruby begged.There, there ! Catherine soothed when she realized that the little ones had no idea what was going on. Im not sick honey ! she explained, Your going to have a new baby brother or sister in a while ! Would you like that ? Catherine asked. Yeah ! they both cried out at once. After Catherine gave them both a big hug, Hilda shuffled them off and had them wait downstairs. Sip your tea slowly Catherine ! Hilda ordered, holding the cup up for her, And try to relax ! About that time another pain hit Catherine and she grabbed Hildas hand and squeezed it tightly. Where is that Doctor ? Hilda asked herself. When Abby and Donna Mae came back in, Hilda sent them right back down to the Kitchen to build a fire and put on a big kettle of water to boil. And bring me all the clean towels you can find ! she called after them. When Charles tried to open the door at Dr. Osburns office and found it locked he became frantic, and begin to pound hard against it.Aint no use in a makin all that racket ! a strange voice behind him said. Doc had ta go out in the country and attend ta one a them oil men what got hurt while a drillin ! he explained. I doubt hell be a comin back any to soon! he added. Charles didnt have any choice, but to return home quickly and tell Hilda the bad news.Hilda didnt waste any time sending Charles down to the kitchen to fetch the hot water from the stove. By the time Charles returned with the water basin full, the girls were back with fresh towels and linens. Now ! Hilda begin to tell Abby and Charles. Go down and tend to the Children out back, and Donna Mae will stay with me.Now go on ! she ordered. We dont need you two under foot right now ! Why cant I stay and help too? Abby protested while stomping her foot slightly. Why child ! Hilda said, You turn white and nearly pass out at the sight of a nose bleed,and were fixin to have a baby here, now be off with you ! she ordered again while shooing them toward the door. Hilda and Donna Mae sat at Catherines side all afternoon, placing cold wash cloths on her forehead and attempting to calm her between each contraction. After a while when Catherine begin to push and groan, Hilda gave Donna Mae some quick instructions on what she was to do to assist in the delivery. Hilda could hear Charles pacing up and down the hall floor right outside the door. Poor Charles ! Donna Mae exclaimed, It must be hard on him waiting and being a new Father and all ! she sighed. Poor Charles ! Hilda scolded.How about Poor catherine ? Hilda asked.Now ! Come help me, Its time ! Hilda added. With Donna Mae and Hilda working together as a team, Catherine finally delivered a beautiful baby boy without incident. When Charles heard Hilda call out, Its a boy ! He almost did a back- flip on the wooden floor as the Children cheered. When Donna Mae bathed him, wrapped him in a soft blanket, and handed him to Catherine, she held him close and cried. She could hear her Mothers voice echoing in her ear like she was standing right there. Catherine ! she said. When you have children of your own someday, you will never forget the first time you look into the face of your own child. Then you will understand what a Mothers love is all about ! That time was now ! and Catherine was overwhelmed with a beautiful emotion that she had never felt before................
