Character of Rebecca...EXCERPT FROM YA NOVEL, CIMARRONA: The next day Rebecca had beaten me to it. She had started unpacking her luggage and her chest and there were clothes, shoes, perfume oils, a porcelain doll that looked just like her, and among her books there was one with funny, square-like letters that I had never seen before in my life. I took the liberty of picking it up. “It’s a Torah,” she explained, in much better spirits than she had been in yesterday. “For you it’s the first five books of the Bible.” Except that the nuns had never given me a Bible. In fact, I had never seen anyone in Mass pick up a Bible, only a rosary. “See? This is Hebrew, the original language of the Bible,” she said, as if to reveal a sacred secret. My head was going to burst with all of this information entering my skull at once. “Here, this one I am sure you can read.” Rebecca handed me a book in English. “William Shakespeare’s Othello,” I read slowly. “I don’t think I have heard of this writer.” She showed me more. There was one named Aristotle and he was poetic and one such Plato and he had a republic and those were the Greeks. I knew none of them. “What are these nuns teaching you here?” Rebecca asked.
