Charities: As an old aged pensioner with a small company pension, I do like to donate to deserving causes when I can. However, I have found to my cost that it is inadvisable to give them the chance to claim extra from the taxman as by doing that you give them your address and from then on one is inundated with letters appealing for more. I donated to Macmillan because I was pleased with the care given to her by one of their nurses. I was allocated a nurse when I developed the disease and have never heard from her from day one. But every week someone from them send a letter out. Cafod is another. I am bombarded with appeals from them. The third is the Lifeboat Appeal. My uncle Tom was the bosun of the Jersey lifeboat and so I supported them as well. Somehow, I now get letters from the Poole and Kings Lynn depots as well as their Hq. I know all of these organisations employ professional staff, some earning six figure annual salaries, but they are missing the point that we support them because we want to, but not because they shove their baskets under our noses. The Salvation Army usually have an officer standing outside BHS in our town. I never pass without popping something into his tin, and that is because I remember as a boy listening to them playing on Saturday evenings in the Royal Square in Jersey. There...thats my rant. What do you think ?
