Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, one of the ten - TopicsExpress

Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, one of the ten most influential books ever, on this date in 1859. Darwin, of course, was basically right, though some people misinterpreted his writings and used them to justify racism and eugenics. OT: One reason I respect the Methodists is that they say evolutionary theory is compatible with Christianity, as the Bible is not to be taken literally. Last time I went to church, which was a couple of years ago because my sister was going to sing, the minister preached a sermon against the idea that any one interpretation of the Bible was right. I thought that was pretty open-minded for a church in a small Tennessee town. Apparently in middle Tennessee the Methodists and the Episcopalians are the moderate Protestants. The Baptists are conservatives, and so is the Church of Christ. The Presbyterians there are a group called Cumberland Presbyterians, and they are conservatives as well. I think those are the five big churches. Then there are a few fundamentalist groups, and there are the black churches, Baptist and AME, which are often conservative too. There are a few mega-churches near Nashville. There arent many Lutherans, as there are few people of German origin, and there arent too many Catholics, either, as there arent many Italians or Poles as in Northern cities. Some Hispanic Catholics are starting to move in, generally Mexicans. Most white people are of British origin. There are some Jews in Nashville, but not in the surrounding towns. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Origin_of_Species
