Charles Webster pointed out something about how our police system is failing, so I thought Id post some of my ideas about how to change the police force: 1) Introduce a system to remove temptation for crime by introducing compulsory radios to be fitted to all motor vehicles. This is already the law in Australia. It prevents smash-and-grab stealing of car radios. If your roadworthy vehicle is already fitted with a radio, then its not a temptation for thieves. This can even work on exchange programmes for vehicles, televisions, computers etc. There is a market for used computers. Feed this market from an exchange programme and take the market away from the people who break into houses to steal technology and resell it. 2) Improve the salaries of the police, and as I suggested in my post about employment, end the nonsense of people needing matric to join the police force. Theyre wasting time on getting people who can pass a basic history and geography exam, to work in the force, and allowing less literate people to slip through the cracks. Here the apprentice and intern system would work well. Get youngsters into the offices to do the drudge work, train them and then allow them to graduate with an NTCIII which will allow them into formal training. The salaries of people in the police force is a big issue. 3) Incorporate the current security companies into the police force, including their dogs, alarm systems and so on. If people have alarm systems and the triggering of the alarm will bring blue lights and uniformed people, it might be a little more of a deterrent to opportunistic break-ins. 4) Deal with corruption with summary dismissal and loss of pension, like the US police do. If youre fired from the police force, you lose all your benefits, including your pension. 5) Consult with specialist investigators in the outside world, and bring in proper forensics into our police force, with again, interns, and trainees who can graduate as full forensic CSI specialists. Offer proper courses at universities (BSc) and pay the people who do the work, good salaries. 6) I also thought about making the metro police into a local police force, and the SAPS into a sort of FBI force. Perhaps making the national force, the FBI into a better-paid and more sought-after opportunity for better-educated people.
