Charlie, the intrepid spaniel, and I started off on our walk in Carderock along a breathtaking section of the canal. The trees are in peak fall foliage colors, and the sun is coming in and out of the clouds, making cool reflections in the water. A blue heron makes a dramatic and graceful landing breaking into the water by extending his rather large wings. The intrepid takes a look and starts barking at the heron. I sush him up as I am spell bound by this sight. If I had let him bark, though, we could have witnessed quite a retreat by the heron. Either way, we got to enjoy nature in its fullest today.
