His expression remained warm and pleasant as we entered the dining room of the Inn and took a seat near the window. I found myself wondering why I kept resisting his offer of marriage. He was everything most women looked for in a husband--a handsome, rich man who wanted to take care of his wife. I had to admit, too, that at twenty-eight and already once-married, I wasn’t exactly a fresh maiden. After ordering drinks and our meal for us, Clay finally answered my accusation. “It’s no secret that I want that land. You don’t use it for anything anyway, so adding it to my property would be easy.
