Chastisement of God But the hand of the Lord was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and He ravaged them and struck them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. 1 Samuel 5:6 What was happening in Ashdod reminds me of the plagues God brought against Pharaoh and the Egyptians. God did not bring the plagues immediately; He first warned them. Moses asked Pharaoh to let the people go; then, he warned Pharaoh of the plagues to come, if he did not release the people. God did the same thing for the Philistines. First, He knocked Dagon over and still they did not get it. Then, God broke off Dagon’s head and arms. Even then, they did not release the Ark of the Covenant. After these two warnings, God had to bring on the plagues. He struck the people with tumors. In the King James Bible, they are called emerods, which means “tumours, haemorrhoids, piles.” Some of the older commentaries say along with the tumors, God sent rats which is interesting because rats bring plagues. It sound like God was trying to get their attention. He warned and then He sent the plagues. He was demonstrating His great power, while showing them their god, Dagon, was a false god, with no power. I think God does the same thing today. He allows things, because He is trying to get our attention. He warns us time after time, but eventually He has to do something more drastic. He is always motivated by love, whether you are a friend to God or His enemy. Pastor Raul Ries
