Chat padocks: Putting chat (like crushed limestone) in your horses padocks... - keeps their feet dry (no mud. greatly reduces thrush, whiteline and poor hoofwalls from standing in mud) - allows barefoot hoofs to where down a bit natraly (does not replace trimming) and helps the frog work even better. Overall it is very good for hoof health and eliminates mud. Hoof care: Whenever I worry about a horses hoofs whereing down to short I tell my self this: Wild horses move 25 miles a day over baseball sized lava rocks (very abrasive) without so much as a flinch if they step on one. Many endurance horses are barefoot (without hoof boots). Some monted police groups have all barefoot horses. A horses hoof can where down to level (or mustang rolled) with the sole. A sole of abdicate thickness (fairer didnt trim it too much) will not be sore at this length, infact it is the ideal length and what a hoof is trimmed to. Not many horses hoofs will even do this or we wouldnt need to trim at all. It would take a lot of work over rough surfaces to get a hoof to self trim. So a properly trimmed hoof wont even flinch walking on rocks.
