Cheap Oil: Boon or Bust for sustainable, renewable energy? As more people on the planet compete for less energy resources, it is actually China that leads the world in combined alternative energy, from solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, biofuel, and and other renewable energy production. nature/news/economics-manufacture-renewables-to-build-energy-security-1.15847 USA now #1 in oil, as China hits # 1 in renewable, alternative energy. Nature magazine encourages world leaders to follow Chinas example for green growth, not the US or EU models. China leads the world in alternative (green) renewable energy with the production of 378 GW (giga-watts) in 2013. The same year, the US produced less than half that amount, 172GW. Now is the time for an explosion for sustainable, renewable energy R&D, and not oil subsidies. China sees it long term vision to depend less on carbon fossil fuel, not only to reduce carbon emissions but to have energy security. The US instead has been drifting back to its bad habits and old ways to drive commercial profit before R&D incentives to create sustainability and environment. Cheap Baaken Oil Hits Snooze Button On Prolific US Research In Green Energy While US new shale oil has made oil price plummet, the cheap gas has brought on a new wave of monster gas guzzling SUVs and pickups, and put the snooze button of the decade of prolific research and investments in alternative fuel efficient technology after 9/11. US short term memory will have long-term consequences. money.cnn/2014/11/03/autos/cheap-gas-suv-pickup-sales grist.org/climate-energy/will-falling-gas-prices-be-bad-for-the-climate Wind Power China produces 75GW of wind power a year, and is projected to hit a staggering amount of 200GW by 2020. Last month, a Wind Energy Association report stated that the US produced 62 GW in 2013, but the growth rate is slower than China, and cheap oil may curtail future US wind energy growth. This year, Chinas solar power supply leapt to 23 gigawatts, and projected to reach 35 GW in 2015, and 65 GW by 2020, which will make it profitable, sustainable and not dependent on oilprice/Alternative-Energy/Solar-Energy/Why-China-Is-Leading-The-World-In-Solar-Power.html bbc/news/science-environment-25623400 As China becomes # 1 in renewable and alternative energy, USA becomes #1 in oil: The shale oil frakking industry in the US has led to its biggest production ever. Next next years production estimate will be around 9.4 million barrels a day, the highest since 1972. The US is now the world # 1 producer of oil and natural gas. The Paris-based International Energy Agency estimates that in order for the North Dakota and Montana Bakken shale oil formation to be profitable, the price of oil needs to exceed US $42 a barrel. smh.au/business/mining-and-resources/how-the-us-fracked-opec-oil-enters-new-era-20141128-11w8f0.html#ixzz3KUNEdNCu Saudi Arabia and the twelve member OPEC oil cartel has decided to quit interceding and controlling oil prices, and throw in the towel let oil prices float on the world crude market and manage themselves. This however, will effect the profit on US shale oil, and safety and environmental standards may be compromised so there is a profit. We are entering a new era for oil prices, where the market itself will manage supply, no longer Saudi Arabia and OPEC, said Mike Wittner, the head of oil research at Societe Generale in New York. Amory Lovins, physicist, co-founder of Rocky Mountain Institute RMI rmi.org and world leading advocate and researcher in renewable energy, wrote in a RMI blog, Fracked oil and gas, Canadian tar sands, Saudi oil - none can beat modern efficiency and renewables on direct cost, price stability or impacts, and says, The end of the conflict-creating, climate-threatening Oil Age is coming clearly into view, and not a moment too soon.
