The philosophical thought of the 17th & 18th century Enlightenment was marked by an emphasis on reason and autonomy. Slote rejects what he considers this over-emphasis as well as the post-modernist rejection of reason and actual value in favor a more balanced approach that encompasses reason, value, and receptivity. More than emotion and empathy, receptivity is the foundation on which emotion and empathy rest that helps give us a better picture of ourselves epistemologically and ethically.
