Check out George J Fowler III editorial in Times Picayune today: For many years we seem to be on opposite sides of the Cuba issue. I am not happy with that because I know we both want a free Cuba where its citizens can reap the reward of their labor. You quoted me in Fridays editorial saying what we all know is true: until Congress approves the lifting of the embargo nothing will change on US Cuba policy. Therefore its in the hands of our elected leaders not in the hands of a vocal Cuban community as you referred to us. Congress is unlikely to lift the embargo because, year in year out, the US State Department declares Cuba to be a State Sponsor of Terrorism. Moreover, Cuba repeatedly declares itself to be the enemy of America. Also under US law, the embargo can be lifted unilaterally by the Castro brothers leaving the country and holding independently audited free elections. After 56 years of a murderous dictatorship that possibility doesnt exist. I do take issue with two points you make. First, the Castro brothers and their communist dictatorship is responsible for the misery in Cuba; not America or its policies. Cuba can and does business with over one hundred countries but that cant overcome their failed economic policies. Secondly, you suggest that we do business with China so why not with Cuba? You know well that in China, though subject to the same abuses, the citizens can keep their earnings and business profits. Not so in Castros Cuba; every penny into Cuba goes into Castros pockets. Castros military owns the tourist industry. Happy days will be here again when the Castro brothers terrorist dictatorship ends.
