Check out New York arrests plummet following officers murders. Several New York City police officers told the New York Post that they had stopped arresting people for minor crimes out of fear for their own safety after the Dec. 20 murders of two fellow officers. Im not writing any summonses, one officer said. Do you think Im going to stand there so someone can shoot me or hit me in the head with an ax? The newspaper reported in a separate story that arrests in the city had dropped by 66 percent over the last week. [New York Post, The Huffington Post]. These NYPD cops fear for their safety, not because they dont carry tasers and guns, but because if they use them, they risk public outcry, politically motivated state and federal prosecution, intense media invasion of their privacy and embarrassment, government sanctioned protests, and potential loss of job and personal financial disaster. And they dont have to come to roll call with two, and sometimes only one officer like NOPD does. Has everyone forgotten that before our NYPD brothers were ambushed, our very own NOPD officer was ambushed while in uniform on a detail? The outcome could have been identical. Fortunately, it was not. Officer safety here is even more tenuous than in NYC. And getting worse, as our attrition rate remains steadily at one cop leaving every three days, despite a semi-annual two dozen recruit graduation.
