Check out this video on YouTube: The greatest version of the greatest American protest song. The words are from a poem written by a New York labour leader who had seen a photograph of a black man being lynched in the American south in the 1930s. It is said that whenever Lady Day performed this song, she insisted that it be the last number in her show. After singing it, she was too emotionally drained to continue. I can understand that. Every few months I think of this and look it up. I think of the courage it must have taken to sing this in 1940s America. heres the song: youtube/watch?v=Web007rzSOI&feature=youtube_gdata_player Here is the photo that inspired the poem.
