She is internationally known for her work on the evolution of brain and intelligence in dolphins and whales and comparisons to primates. In 2001 she co-authored a ground-breaking study offering the first conclusive evidence for mirror self-recognition in bottlenose dolphins. (Reiss and Marino, 2001) after which she decided against further research with captive animals. The Sea Shepherd superstars this week are the Operation Grindstop 2014 campaign leaders: Lamya Essemlai, who is President Sea Shepherd France and Campaign Leader at Sea Shepherd Global. She is Operation Grindstop 2104 campaign leader in Faroe Islands. Lamya Essemlali has a Masters degree in Environemental Sciences and an associate degree in Buisness Communication and Marketing. She met Captain Paul Watson in Paris in 2005. He’s been her incredible inspiration. Her encounter with him has certainely been a turning point in my activism for the oceans. She joined Sea Shepherd shortly after that, participated to two Antarctica campaigns, and led two campaigns in the Mediterranean sea to defend endangered blue fin tuna. She has also lead a anti poaching campaign in Senegal. She is now leading the off shore crew of Operation Grindstop in the Faroe Islands, which is her third campaign in the Faroes to oppose the largets slaughter of marine mammals in Europe. Besides, she is the co founder and President of Sea Shepherd France and vice president of Sea Shepherd Switzerland. She also wrote a book with the Captain Paul Watson “Interview with a Pirate”. The book was realeased in 2012 in France and 2013 in the US and UK. https://facebook/lamya.essemlali. Rosie Kunneke, is also Operation Grindstop 2014 campaign leader of Sea Shepherd. She has a degree in Finance and worked in the financial industry as Director for 12 years. She always wanted to help animals and to be involved in conservation. 5 years ago she decided to sell her car and devote her time to helping animals and fighting for our planet. She signed up to volunteer for Sea Shepherd, which was one of two organizations that she research that actually actively fought for animals and the conservation of our beautiful oceans. Her first campaign she joined Scott West on the ground in Taiji in 2010. The same year she joined the Bob Barker for Operation No Compromise down to Antarctica. The next year she was team leader in Taiji and also part of Operation Desert Seal in Namibia. The next year she would have been team leader in Taiji (Operation Infinite Patience) again, but was denied entry into Japan. The same year she was again part of Operation Desert Seal . Besides volunteering for Sea Shepherd, she works with animals in one of the poorest townships in Cape Town (South Africa) - a place called TinCanTown. To pay the bills while she fills her days helping animals, she works half day for a Veterinary Surgeon where she is being trained to obtain a qualification as primary care-giver in order to be able to treat animals in very poor communities. Currently she leading the onshore crew of Operation Grindstop 2014 in the Faroe Islands.
