Check this out: January 22, 1949. Blues legend Billie Holiday being booked by San Francisco PD on a narcotics charge. Acting on a tip, SFPD raided her room at the Mark Twin Hotel and found a small amount of opium and a pipe. Ms Holiday claimed that she had been set up--ya think? That acting on a tip thing doesnt fly anymore. The Mark Twain was the best hotel that allowed black folk to stay in those days, until Jack Benny threatened the Fairmont that he would move his entire entourage to the Mark Twain if the Fairmont wouldnt let Eddie Anderson (Rochester) stay. The Fairmont manager quickly backed down.
