Check your smoke alarms! At 4am this morning ours, which we changed the battery on a month ago, awoke us to the smell of smoke. Heading downstairs it got thicker and there was a flickering orange glow from the kitchen. First thought was we had left a pan on and it was on fire. Oh no I was greeted, through the smoke, by the the sight of the dishwasher in flames coming from the top and front of the door and they were about 6 inches above the work top. I did the chip pan trick with damp towels and managed to dampen the flames but it was still burning within. I rushed to the garage and got my small fire extinguisher (I have had for many years) and that put it all out very quickly but it was still very hot. Allie opened doors and windows, Ben watched (he said he had started dreaming about a fire) but was very cool about it, and I got the dishwasher outside and hosed it down till it was out. Scary stuff and now all we can think about what could have been. Thank you Mr Smoke Alarm and never buy a Hotpoint! Remarkably everything inside the machine was fine. House smells though! Also that horrid plastic burning smell. Need new work tops and a thorough clean of the house. Lucky lucky escape. A few phone calls to make this morning. Check those smoke alarms!! Relieved Mr Smith!
