Most of u know lashes are a massive part of my life please dont kill urs for the sake of saving a few quid!!!! Bad chemicals Fragrance The vast majority of beauty products contain some added fragrances, as the bulk of chemicals that go into cosmetics do not have a naturally pleasant odor. You should be aware, however, that companies are allowed to simply put ‘fragrance’ on the label of a product even if it was necessary to add hundreds or thousands of different chemicals in order to give the product its distinctive smell. Unsurprisingly, many of the fragrance ingredients added to mascara can be very bad for your health. The Environmental Working Group considers fragrance to be an eight on a scale of one to ten (according to which ten indicates the most severe danger). Some of these fragrance chemicals are connected to allergic reactions such as skin rashes, while others have been known to cause much more serious problems. Among these more severe concerns are extreme dizziness, mood problems, and particularly painful headaches. Petrolatum Petrolatum is commonly known as petroleum jelly, and it sometimes contains particular impurities that are dangerous because they are capable of breaking down into carcinogenic chemicals. If your mascara contains petrolatum and gets onto your skin, it may also promote premature aging by suffocating skin cells. Parabens Parabens (such as methylparaben and propylparaben) mimic the female hormone estrogen, and as a result parabens have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. According to the Environmental Working Group, methylparaben is known to be toxic. More specifically, some research projects have shown that it can sometimes interfere with brain and nervous system function. In addition, the U.S. Department of Labor has noted that methylparaben can seriously irritate the skin, causing redness, rashes, itching and local swelling. When put into mascaras, it is particularly prone to causing eye irritation (resulting in slight swelling and in stinging, red eyes). Triethanolamine (TEA) The Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the United States warns that exposure to TEA can cause a number of undesirable health problems. These range from fairly minor eye and skin irritations to problems with the respiratory tract. Some evidence even suggests that TEA can cause asthma to develop. More significantly, in vitro tests on the cells of mammals have proven that TEA encourages mutations (meaning that exposure to TEA may increase your risk of developing cancer), and several studies on animals have shown that high doses of TEA causes tumors to form. Diazolidinyl Urea Diazolidinyl urea is one several chemicals that can release formaldehyde. You should try to avoid any chemicals with this particular property, as formaldehyde is hazardous to your health in a host of worrying and serious ways. For example, chemicals that release formaldehyde can cause insomnia, respiratory problems (such as asthma), an irregular heartbeat, dizziness, severe fatigue, and persistent headaches. In addition, diazolidinyl urea sometimes contains carcinogenic impurities, so it could increase your likelihood of developing cancerous tumors. Finally, it can weaken your immune system, so exposure leaves you more likely to develop viral and bacterial infections. Ethyl acetate Ethyl acetate is found not just in mascara but also in nail polish, cigarettes, and glue. It is a potent skin and respiratory tract irritant, especially if you are consistently exposed to it. Using products that contain large amounts of this chemical also put you at risk of damaging your heart, liver, lungs and kidneys. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) SLS is widely used in everything from shampoos to toothpastes, and so it will come as no surprise to learn that it is commonly added to mascara as well. It is also found in car wash soap, engine degreaser, and floor cleaner. It is bad for your health in a number of different and important ways. Firstly, it is a very powerful skin irritant that can cause dryness and sores. In fact, SLS is so irritating to the skin that it is often used to test the effectiveness of chemicals that are supposed to heal the skin. Secondly, several studies on animals have suggested that exposure to SLS can cause depression, respiratory disorders, heart problems, eye irritation, sight damage, and bowel irregularities. Finally (and most importantly), there is strong evidence to support the claim that exposure to SLS increases your likelihood of developing cancer. This is thought to be because SLS can react with other chemicals in cosmetics to produce carcinogenic dioxins and nitrates (which are then easily absorbed into your blood stream). Propylene Glycol The FDA lists propylene glycol as a safe ingredient, but some recent research has cast doubt on this decision. Specifically, propylene glycol appears to cause severe skin irritation and sensitization in certain people, and some studies suggest that it may promote abnormalities in the liver, brain and kidneys.
