Cheesesteak... I was stationed in south Philadelphia from 1988 - 1991. This is something that is near and dear to my heart. Want to piss a rural Iowa butcher off...just ask him to thinly slice ribeye steak. ;) My two favorites were Louie Ds (West Des Moines location was only open for about a year a couple years back), and a place called South Phillys (open on Douglas for one year about 10 yrs ago). Pepperjax is pretty good. No wiz though... Most of the bar and grills are sad representations of a classic. I finally tried Jersey Guys yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised. The place is simple. Grab a menu, sit at a table and decide what you want, order and pay at the bar. Take a seat again and theyll bring you the food when your order is up. Very reminiscent of the steaks found coming off the grills of the local Italian markets in Philly and dives tucked in the subway stations. Best of all...a great steak wit wiz and mushrooms. The roll was soft, but firm. The type of roll you want to hold together meat, cheese, and whatever other of your poison you choose to add. Currently my first choice as far as a good authentic cheesesteak for the money in the Des Moines metro. Anyone have any gems they think highly of when it comes to cheesesteak?
