Chelsea Jane Moore challenged me to come up with 10 books that have influenced me or stayed with me, and to nominate 10 friends to do the same. I usually dont like getting tagged for things, but Ive enjoyed thinking about this. These are not necessarily my favorite books - though some of them are - but books that have been very important to me at different times in my life or throughout a large portion of my life. 1. The Dream of a Common Language, Adrienne Rich 2. Selected Poems, Galway Kinnell 3. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare 4. Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness, Sharon Salzberg 5. Writing Down the Bones, Natalie Goldberg 6. The Golden Notebook, Doris Lessing 7. The English Patient, Michael Ondaatje 8. The Tiger in the Grass: Stories and Other Inventions, Harriett Doerr 9. The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Milan Kundera 10. The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley Im going to name 10 friends whose lists Id be very interested in seeing, should you feel inspired to create them. And if anyone else chooses to pick up the gauntlet, Id love to see yours as well: Elena Felder, Debra DeNoyelles, Michael Gene Sullivan, Christopher Chen, Aaron Loeb, Kate Verhoef, Amy Apel, Laurel Oh Car Angel, Bonnie Eslinger, Vienna Teng, Amy Mueller (oops! Thats 11!)
