Chelsea angry about Mata-Rooney Exchange Chelsea confirm bidding for Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney but deny offering a player in part exchange. In a statement issued in Bangkok today shortly before Jose Mourinho’s first game as manager, Chelsea admitted that they had tabled a cash only offer for the England striker. That bid, understood to be in the region of £20 million, has been rejected but Chelsea are furious at claims that the proposed deal was Luiz or Mata plus £10 million. They suspect that this has been briefed by Manchester United and are adamant that the two players are very much part of Mourinho’s plans. Mourinho, though, is certain to have irritated Manchester United over the past week by publicly admitting his interest in Rooney and then questioning whether his England career could be affected by being second-choice to Robin van Persie. There is, then, a theory that the Luiz/Mata link has emerged as some form of retaliation. United have not officially commented but Chelsea have now made their position clear. “Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney,” said the Chelsea statement
