Chelsea pursuit of Real Madrid star set to end in disappointment Chelsea’s pursuit of Portuguese left-back Fabio Coentrao could end in disappointment for the London Club, as the Real Madrid full-back is reportedlyin talks with his former club Benfica. The 25-year old defender was a favourite of former Los Blancos manager, Jose Mourinho, who has returned to English shores for a second homecoming with Chelsea. Coentrao was preferred by Mourinho over Madrid’s other buccaneering left-back, Marcelo, as the Portuguese International started in almost all of the big-games including the biggest of them all – the ‘El Clasico’. The ‘Special One’ Mourinho preferredCoentrao’s cultured approach at left-back over the aggressive nature of Marcelo. Chelsea are in dire need of a quality left-backas Ashley Cole, widely regarded as the best inthe business right now, is nearing the twilight of his sensational career. The EnglishInternational has just one year left on his current deal at Stamford Bridge, as the London Club have identified Coentrao as a potential successor to Cole. However, Chelsea’s pursuit of Coentrao couldend in failure as the left-back’s former club, Benfica, are said to be interested in bringinghim back to the Estadio da Luz. Coentrao, who played two full seasons at Benfica, is said to prefer a move back to Benfica, although the Portuguese club have played down talks of a possible move. With the clouds of uncertainty hanging over Coentrao’s future at Real Madrid, Chelsea would need to act fast if they want to sign up the player as it is reported that moneybags Monaco are also interested in the solid left-back.
