Chemicals Not Used by Fishermen to Preserve Fish: Fisheries Dept Dept rubbishes the complaint as false and baseless The Fisheries Dept has rubbished the claim of a news report that the fishermen in the Islands were using chemicals to preserve fishes. On 13th of August - 2013 a news item was published in one of the Local News papers stating that chemicals are being used by the local Fishermen and Traders to preserve the fishes. Immediately thereafter a thorough field level investigation was carried out by the Department of Fisheries in the whole District of South Andaman. The Dept said that the claim and content of the news item referred above was found to be totally baseless and false. The local Fishermen and Traders preserve their fish catch only in ice. The iced fish catch is sold locally and a substantial part of it goes to various fish processing plants for dressing, freezing, chilling and packing. Annually about 2000 tons of frozen/chilled quality fish is taken to mainland for marketing in India and export to Foreign countries. Till date no export consignment of Andaman has been rejected which indicates that the Andaman fish product is free from prohibited chemical or biological contaminants. However, any member of the public who has got any information with regard to the use of any prohibited chemical in fish preservation may kindly inform the Director of Fisheries/the concerned Zonal Office/ Food Inspector of DHS alongwith a sample of the contaminated fish so as to enable the department proceed further as per law. Due to the non-availability of a competent Food Analyst at Port Blair the preserved samples will be sent to mainland with the help of Food Inspector, Directorate of Health Services for examination. A communication from Asst Director, Fisheries said.
