Cheryl Tempkin is a co-Pres. of Sisterhood of Temple Beth Torah in Tamarac, FL and visits Israel on a regular basis. She is in Israel now and sent this message on Monday morning to our sisters in Florida Region via their President Anne Schimberg. We invite you to read it. Hi all, Just a few brief rambling thoughts to share and let you know that Im thinking of all of you: This country is now enveloped in a dark pallor. While the rockets fell it was tense but life went on; at least everyone went through the motions, but this is a different feel altogether. The loss of soldiers from the much-esteemed Golani Brigade was a devastating loss. Israel being such a small country, everyone has someone who is either intimately or peripherally involved in this incursion. And my understanding is that 2 of the fallen soldiers are US citizens; one of the dead has been identified as being from California. And then there are the horrific pictures from Gaza. It is terrible that Hamas has so little regard for human life that they do everything in their power to place innocent citizens in harms way. No one wants to see the deaths of innocent children and women. This being 2014, you probably all hear the same news and see the same visuals that I do so there is little I can add on that front. But being so close to the actual events, it becomes all too real when we read of these Hamas terrorists emerging from the amazingly well-fortified tunnels with the intent of kidnapping/killing Israeli military and ordinary citizens. Previously I would not have understood the psychological toll that these situations impose on everyone involved but this has given me a quick glimpse into the reality of living in a place that is always vulnerable to the craziness of out-of-control terrorists. Their mentality is so foreign to us. I am cautiously hopeful that Kerry will arrive today in Cairo/tomorrow in Jlem and somehow patch together some kind of ceasefire. We are very lucky to have very good US representation in Israel in our American ambassador, Dan Shapiro. And yesterday there was a humanitarian ceasefire for a few hours which gave a bit of respite from the mayhem. And let me again thank each of you who has taken the time to write, your love and support are so appreciated! with love from Jerusalem, Cheryl
