Cheryl is Chair of Design History at Northumbria University and Visiting Professor in Design History at the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Museum and Parsons School of Design in New York. A design historian with an interest in gender and design, and the history of fashion and ceramics, she studied for an undergraduate degree at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and an MLitt at the University of Newcastle before returning to the University of East Anglia for her PhD. She is Editorial Chair of the Journal of Design History (Oxford University Press) and a Trustee of the Design History Society. She is a member of the AHRC Peer Review College and has served on several of its panels, and she has undertaken peer reviews for ESRC and the Canadian Social Science and Humanities Research Board. Between 2010-12 she was guest curator, ‘Women and Ceramics’, at the Musée Beaux Arts de Montreal, Montreal, Canada, and she is consultant to Tyne and Wear Museum’s ‘Collecting 20thC Design’, HLF-funded project. Currently she has an AHRC Research Fellowship and is Principal Supervisor of an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral student in collaboration with the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead.
