Chestnut-tailed starling (Sturnia malabarica) Mumbai- Jan 2014 Chestnut-tailed starlings are perched birds with very neatly combed long hair on their heads which gives them an attention grabbing look, add to that some very fast movements in a symphonic manner while feeding nectar and insects on trees, these birds are a pleasure to watch for any budding bird-watcher! While they are known to be partially migratory, they are yearlong residents in NE India. The sounds are highly metallic notes with occasional whistles. These starlings generally nest in tree holes left by barbets, but even this species has been intelligent enough to adapt to the human settlements by nesting in building holes and high perched shelters! The best time to watch Chestnut-tailed Starlings is early in morning when they get ready to a feeding frenzy in small groups.
