Chet had his follow up appointment at Vanderbilt today. Im liking his doctor, she explains things well and takes time. She asked Chet why he was here...he had no idea and seemed put out by the fact that he had to come. She asked him if he knew what he had...he did not. -_- She asked him if he had any problems with his memory or with his speech. He said not that he was aware of. -_- He did not know his birth date and I never know like when the nurse asks him all these questions like birth date, address, if its a test or should I answer for him? So I say..should I answer? o.0 She asked me did I understand what he has? I said Early Onset Alzheimers and Frontotemporal dementia has been discussed. She reminded me there is no absolute diagnosis until death and autopsy. But she feels strongly he has Logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia related to Alzheimers disease. A mouth full huh? She talked me into getting him seen by speech and language pathology to be tested to see if there is help with communication skills. I put it off last time...now will follow through. Chet has been on Aricept 10mg for a long time now well over a year and on 20mg for about 3-4 months. She is adding Namenda sp?. I asked her is he staying on the Aricept? She told me he will be on it the rest of his life for they have done studies that show being taken off of it causes quicker decline or the patient does worse. The Namenda is not meant to improve memory though some have, its meant to delay brain cell death so it doesnt happen as fast. She has never had a patient have a bad reaction to it. I told her I put Chet on coconut oil capsules, she asked what I knew about it. I said to feed the brain...She said since we were discussing brain food she told me about a powder that you mix with water and drink I cant remember the name dang it. Its classified food type to feed the brain and there have been many good results with it on Alzheimers patients. Again she doesnt want to through to many new things at once...so he hasnt been on the coconut oil long enough to see any difference yet and adding the Namenda is a gradual dose increase thing so the powder drink is on hold. Prayers always appreciated on this journey...thanks...Heidi
