Chibok Girls: Government Boosts Rescue The Nigerian government is deploying more troops to Borno State as part of efforts to rescue the over 200 school girls abducted from Chibok over a month ago. Addressing a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the coordinator of the National Information Crises Management Centre and Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Mr Mike Omeri, says the deployment is aimed at fast tracking the search and rescue operations of the girls abducted from their dormitory in Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok by members of the Boko Haram sect. After President Goodluck Jonathan called for international support during a media chat on May 4, US, France, Israel and the United Kingdom amongst others pledged to support the search and rescue efforts of the Nigerian military. They pledged to provide intelligence and surveillance support to the military, as they continue to search for the girls. Mr Omeri also said that the allied forces would continue to complement the efforts of the Nigerian military with the sole aim of rescuing the girls alive. The Boko Haram sect, on May 12 showed a video of over 100 girls it claimed to have abducted from the school all dressed in hijab, chanting a portion of the Quran. The sect leader, in a separate video, said he had given the girls freedom by converting the Christians amongst them to Muslims. A list released by the Christian Association Nigeria showed that over 60 per cent of the girls abducted were Christians. The abduction of the girls has triggered protests across Nigeria with a ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ demand, aimed at prompting the government to do more in the rescue efforts.
