Chicago (2002) directed by Rob Marshall ★★★★½ (out of five) ⊕ Everyone, esp. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, John C. Reilly, Dana “Queen Latifah” Owens, and Christine Baranski • Actors do all their own singing and dancing (esp. Geres tap-dance) • Stylish and memorable musical numbers with appropriate Fosse-esque choreography • Clever juxtaposition of real life and Roxies cabaret fantasies • Revitalized the long-dormant musical film genre • Zeta-Jones accent is flawless • Danny Elfmans 20s Chicago-jazz score • John Kanders and Fred Ebbs songs… ⊖ …several of which were trimmed to reduce the runtime (they kept the best of them, but one of the better deleted songs, Class, was filmed, but ultimately cut) • Zellweger has a face like a pug, the figure of a 12-year-old, and the voice of chain-smoking grandma… but I guess it fits the character
