Chief Constable Chris Sims has been commended for putting science at the heart of policing for the West Midlands. Chris Sims received the 2013 Sir Robert Peel Medal for Leadership in Evidence-Based Policing at the 6th Cambridge International Conference on Evidence-Based Policing yesterday (Tuesday 9 July). It was presented by Sir Denis O’Connor, Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the Cambridge Police Executive Programme, formerly Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary. Amongst the projects spearheaded by Chief Constable Sims in the West Midlands was a pilot of so-called ‘predictive policing’ undertaken in east Birmingham during 2012. The experiment saw officers visit around 15,000 homes – comprising of burglary victims and their neighbours – in 23 test areas, with a view to making them less of a target for offenders.
