Chief #slc, If your officers cant deal with animals ( even aggressive ones) without resorting to crime (killing) as an absolute last resort ( the dog has already taken a bite and caused bleeding), they should NOT be given a gun. Clearly, they dont know/understand/ realise that with a gun comes responsibility. Now, as Chief you also have a responsibility. You need to aspire trust in your people, department and the fact that you will all do what is right as you say. If that officer still insists he did what was right then you have an even bigger problem than you thought coz no one of clear thinking mind could ever think that was right. How to go forward? Own it. Own and admit your mistake. Show some consequence for the officer. This is not the first time something like this has happened! Where in the world do you just shoot children?? ( any many dog are that to some people). All the way from Australia. You suck. Its absolutely UNACCEPTABLE. Punish that officer. Demote him. Take his gun away. You entered with no warning and no cause. Regards Zherish Opperman
