Child marriage is a phenomenon that occurs around the world in multiple cultures - it is a complex issue that involves class, tradition and religious factors combined in different ways in each patriarchal society. Because of its complexity, it has proved difficult to eradicate, despite international and domestic laws against it. Yet it needs to end, because child marriage leads to rape and abuse, and not only traumatises and harms the bride, but has negative consequences for the society in which it takes place. Child marriage heavily influenced by poverty - young girls are married off to get a dowry or bride price. But once they are married, their chances for education disappear, and they become stuck in the home, usually becoming pregnant quickly. This reinforces the cycle of poverty and abuse. I have a great deal of sympathy for this poor girl - who knows what she must have suffered to have felt driven to kill her husband. She was married to a man that she didnt love. She protested but her parents forced her to marry him, Zubeida Nagee, a womens rights activist in Kano, told AP. Nagee and other activists have written a letter of protest to the Kano state deputy governor. Nagee said Tasiu was a victim of systematic abuse endured by millions of girls in the region. Activists say the blend of traditional customs, Islamic law and Nigerias constitutional law poses a challenge when advocating for the rights of young girls in Nigeria. ~LA huffingtonpost/2014/11/27/wasilat-tasiu-death-sentence_n_6233832.html?cps=gravity
