Children aged 5 to 9 receive the highest number of dog bites, and most of those bites occur while interacting with familiar dogs! You can help prevent your child from being bitten. Consider these guidelines: 1. Do not leave infants or young children alone with dogs, no matter how much you trust them. Most dog bites occur from familiar dogs. 2. Teach your children to be gentle with dogs, and not to pull ears and poke. 3. Teach your children never to approach a strange dog, and to always ask permission from a dogs owner before touching or petting the dog 4. Teach your child to “be a tree” if approached by a strange dog or if a dog she is playing with becomes overstimulated – stand still, arms folded, staring at the ground – until the dog is calm. Responsible dog owners can help prevent dog bites. Here are some tips: 1. Train your dog. 2. Socialize your dog, especially as a young puppy 3. Protect your dog - dont allow people to tease your dog or put it in a situation where it feels threatened. 4. Provide regular exercise and play time so your dog is healthy and happy. 5. Keep your dog current on all vaccinations, especially rabies. 6. When in public, keep your dog on a leash. 7. Avoid wrestling/roughhousing with your dog if s/he becomes overstimulated and unable to calm her/himself 8. NEVER ALLOW YOUR DOG TO RUN LOOSE! Dog bites often occur when dogs are completely unsupervised.
