Chillicothes 1889 Rock Island Depot Museum is all spiffed up and ready for Saturdays vintage train ride event. The 1950s era passenger coaches were used in the movie Public Enemy, starring Johnny Depp. Although all tickets to ride the 4 excursion train round trips to Henry have been sold, its a super opportunity for people to come on down, see the trains and join the party at the depot. What a photo op! Free admission to depot and caboose. Concessions available. Knowledgeable docents will be on hand to describe the many Rock Island and Santa Fe RR artifacts displayed. The railroad station interior looks exactly as it did in the heyday of rail travel. A large model train layout in the baggage room is entertaining for young and old alike. Last night at Peoria North Library, Gary Fyke, former Chillicothe mayor and past president of Chillicothe Historical Society, presented the history of the Rock Island ( formerly the Peoria and Bureau Valley ) Railroad to a full house. He has also created an informative hand-out that will be available at the depot. Donations to maintain the depot are GREATLY appreciated. Volunteers likewise! Chillicothe Historical Society is a 501 C3 organization, maintains 3 museum buildings and relies entirely on donations and fundraisers, receiving no government agency or institutional support.
