Chin Akano WROTE: Each time I remember the little chat I had with my brothers and their friends last week when my younger brother had the child dedication of my niece it reinforces my belief that oyibo and us may not have been created by the same God. It reminded me of the first shocker i had when i started my residency programme in psychiatry in 2003 in the UK. With my nija mentality i told a fat nurse that i liked her body build. She did not say anything to me but i was shocked when i was summoned by my consultant then and later clinical director to explain how and why i upset the nurse. They told me that the nurse has now gone off sick and i had a lot of explaining to do for upsetting her to that degree. I told them i had done nothing to her until i was reminded that i made her aware of her fatness. It took sometime for that issue to be sorted and she came back to work after a few weeks and for the two years i was in that hospital she never spoke to me again. I wished i had shared this experience with one of my brothers. Perhaps one of them would not have told an oyibo lady who works with him that he liked the fact that she had put on some weight following a holidays. He has not recovered from the shock of what followed that comment which he thought was a compliment. Perhaps in nija it is a compliment to tell a woman that she is looking better now she has put on more weight. In the western world it is a no no. !!!!
