#China in 2014 saw a huge surge in #boxoffice revenues, up 36 percent on the previous year, but is it about better quality films, or simply more movie screens? Figures from Chinas #Film Bureau show that in 2014, box-office takings reached nearly 30 billion yuan, or more than 4.7 billion US dollars. One of the factors behind the rise is simply because China is building ever more movie screens each year. Last year, over a thousand cinemas opened their doors, each housing an average of more than 5 screens. That’s around 15 more screens each day on average. There was also good news about the movies themselves. Despite strong competition from Hollywood, homegrown films did well, accounting for more than half of total sales. Romantic comedy Breakup Buddies was the biggest domestic powerhouse. However the top 10 box office hits were still dominated by foreign movies. Michael Bays Transformers: Age of Extinction crowned this year’s blockbuster, grossing nearly 2 billion yuan, or 320 million US dollars in China alone. The year 2014 also saw more people than ever before going to the movies in China. However audiences have complained about the poor quality of homegrown films. According to an online survey by CCTV on Sina Weibo, half of the 10-thousand participants think homegrown films are behind on quality. Some say while the film market matures, films themselves are getting worse in terms of quality. Directors say the countrys film market is still at its start-up phase. Experts in the industry point out that the local market needs to focus on good ideas, rather than prioritizing on making money.
