China is on track to standardize rural land transfers Mr. Gu - TopicsExpress

China is on track to standardize rural land transfers Mr. Gu finally received a fair compensation after winning his lawsuit over the transfer of his land against a local village committee in Shanghai. Due to low farming output, Mr. Gu had transferred his contracted land to the committee who later rented the land to a gas station to make profits. However, the committee only paid Mr. Gu 5,468 yuan which was unfairly low given that the committee received 16,500 yuan in yearly rental fees. Cases like this have not been unusual in China’s vast rural region in recent years, as rural land transfers have remained generally unregulated. The lack of a specified standard has resulted in many contract disputes and loopholes that have damaged farmers core interests. But the table has now turned, as China has specified what it considers tradable in the country’s booming transfers of rural land rights, a move widely considered as protecting the rights and interests of farmers and a concrete step towards rural reform.
