Chip Hobart knew todays pop quiz answer: Laugh, Laugh, the first chart single by the Beau Brummels, made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 2, 1965. Band member Ron Elliott wrote the song, which established the Beau Brummels at the vanguard of the emerging San Francisco rock music scene. The Beau Brummels constituted the first American rejoinder to the British invasion, and introduced folk-rock into the popular music repertoire. KYA radio disc jockeys Tom Donahue and Bob Mitchell co-owned the fledgling Autumn Records label for which the Brummels recorded. Autumns staff producer, another disk jockey known on the air at R&B-formatted KSOL as Sylvester Stewart, would later become better known with his own group as Sly and the Family Stone. Laugh, Laugh rose to No. 15 and remained on the chart for 12 weeks. Read about the Beau Brummels in the e-book version of our first book, Echoes of the Sixties (editpros/bookshelf/echoes_ebook.html).
