Chipimo Comes to the Defence of Electoral Body Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu’s call for the disbanding of the Electoral Commission of Zambia has received widespread condemnation. National Restoration Party President Elias Chipimo says the Patriotic Front government’s fear to lose elections was plunging the country into chaos. Lungu on Friday called for the resignation of the ECZ top management saying they were working with the opposition. But Chipimo said the PF were proving to be bad losers and should change their behaviour. “That statement by the Home Affairs Minister is most unfortunate. What the PF do not realise is that in a democracy elections have to be conducted independently but for them they expected the ECZ to be in collusion with them,” Chipimo said. “What the PF is doing is most unfortunate because they have now realised that they cannot win any elections and they are willing to go to any length to ensure that they docor the outcome of elections.” He said the PF had now resorted to abusing institutions like the judiciary to influence the masses. “They are now compromising the independence of key institutions and unfortunately the judiciary has been acting in a manner that is highly divisive,” Chipimo said. The PF has since losing three out of four by-elections launched a scathing attack on the ECZ for apparently not helping the ruling party to win elections. President Michael Sata has set a 106 target for MPs through by-eletions caused by either enticing opposition MPs to join the ruling party or having the courts nullify seats held by the opposition. zambiareports/2013/08/10/chipimo-comes-to-the-defence-of-electoral-body/
