Chipper and the pack out on a walk this morning working on heel - TopicsExpress

Chipper and the pack out on a walk this morning working on heel and impulse control. The idea walk with my dog is where he is in a heel (beside my leg or a little behind me) with a loose leash and a tuned in attitude! I put a lot of focus on the heel position and my dog walking tuned in and close to me. If hes a little ahead, I know Chipper will be checking out and drifting up--triggering on squirrels, birds, other dogs, etc--and I will end up with a dog lunging at the end of the leash. To keep him in a better state of mind I ask him to heel which not only means walk nicely, but actually make a conscious effort to focus on what you and I are doing--not the world around you. A dog that is working hard to stay focused and tuned in is much less likely to give bad behavior on a walk! Work on getting your dog into a great heel and mental space during the quiet, boring parts of your walk, instead of scrambling at the last moment before explosion! Its what we do in the non-eventful times that lay the foundation for when the stakes are high! If youre casual in your walk, your dog has no reason to take you seriously when adrenaline is pumping! Focus on the small stuff and see huge changes, I promise :)
