Chlorhexidine Di Gluconate is a useful irrigant solution it has - broad anti microbial spectrum - anti fungal activity - binds to dentine - effectiveness against Enterococcus Faecalis - No tissue solvent properties so it is useful in perforation cases However I RARELY use it, why? - it reacts with EDTA and sodium hypochlorite and deactivates both irrigants forking parachloroaniline with hypochlorite (which is carcinogenic) - research shows that good RCT has a high success (as long as sodium hypo is used) - it does NOT dissolve biofilms OR dissolve necrotic pulp tissue For these reasons you should only ever use it as an adjunct to other irrigants and only at the end of trearment after clearing the previous irrigants from the canal. CHX binds to dentine so dont use it as your first irrigant
