Choose sides before the war comes through your door Choose sides before the world knocks on that semblance of normalcy and happiness you call home. It will be swift and decisions unmade will be left undone When your family turns on each other because they know not what else to do You will soon realise the fault only lies with you We pretend we are removed from the world outside by oceans, skies and land However these battles are not fought without us In each suppressed man and woman and childs eyes we see our own end Choose sides before the war comes and says you need to enlist In a fight not of your making, yet it persists It is an eternal fight you behold One deep in each soul How can you sleep when they cry outside the door Or can you no longer hear anymore? Have you managed to desensitize yourself? Indeed it is a skill to have a battle in front of us yet we stay seemingly sane Choose sides before life and death walk through into your personal world Uninvited yet unresolved How can I choose? you shout while they stand side by side Mocking you with their equal grin and sighs Inside you the multiple questions you left aside all come now to haunt you What is your moral compass? How will you die? How did you live? Were you even alive? Where were you when the children cried? Where were you when the women wailed? Where were you when men had their dignity taken away? You seemed to be there. Yet indeed it was merely a shell You ran and hid and still now you hide Unable to decide where to stand on life dilemmas Retreat into your protected world Pretending the noise outside the door does not exist But it does Choose your soul before it dies Choose to love rather than to numb Choose emotional pain if you must in order to fully live Choose to come out of your home and see that despite being deep in the heart of the war, the actual battle is within. by Marion Neubronner 5th August 2014
