Choosing a concealed carry firearm Part VII. 5. Size and Fit. - TopicsExpress

Choosing a concealed carry firearm Part VII. 5. Size and Fit. When I consider size and fit I am not concerned with the overall bulk of the firearm. Bulkiness is scrutinized based on how convenient it will be for me to carry; size and fit are more about how ergonomic the firearm is. Everybody can conceal a Glock model 30 or a Sig P229 butyou’re your hands large enough to operate them properly. Simply put how well does the pistol fit your hand? That being said this is absolutely not about how well the gun feels in your hand. If I were shopping for a new carry weapon I would rank how well it feels in my hand at the absolute bottom of the list right under how much I like its color. No matter which pistol you choose, if you handle it enough to become proficient with it, it will feel good in your hand. What I do look at when considering size and fit is how well the pistol functions in my hand. Can I operate all of the levers and buttons while maintaining a firing grip? I might be in a situation where I have no choice but run this pistol one handed and I need to be able to operate safeties, de-cockers, magazine releases, or slide lock release levers if the pistol has them. I had a Sig P220 and it was an awesome gun, it shot well, it was reliable, and definitely well made but I could not reach the de-cock lever with my firing hand thumb. To de-cock this thing I had to break my grip, and then slightly rotate the gun in my hand to reach the lever. If I had to do that one handed in a high stress situation there is a good chance that it would end up on the floor.
