Chris Mardon, one of the 17 founding members of the Victorian - TopicsExpress

Chris Mardon, one of the 17 founding members of the Victorian Greens, died on Saturday morning (9th August 2014). His funeral will be on Wednesday 13th August, at 12.15pm at Springvale Cemeterys Wilson Chapel. Chris was a brilliant man, hardworking and remarkably self-effacing given his prodigious talent, although resolute in putting forward his views. I will certainly miss our conversations at state councils, national conferences & local events. Condolences to his family. ____________________________ FROM THE PARTY: Chris was a long term Greens and environmental activist, a founding Greens Victoria member, ex-President of the Conservation Council of Victoria and co-author of the seminal book Seeds for Change (along with Deborah White, Phillip Sutton, Alan Pears, John Dick and Maurie Crow). He was a process engineer and scientist by profession having worked for the CSIRO. He was the elected coordinator of the Greens Victoria energy and climate change policy group up until his death. Over many years, he campaigned and advocated on a range of environmental problems including pollution in the Geelong region by Shell refinery. Despite struggling with respiratory problems for the last couple of years, Chris continued to prepare and disseminate detailed analysis of energy matters to his extensive network of contacts up until only a week or so again. His profound contribution to our understanding of energy systems, and his formulation of integrated energy and manufacturing policy will be sorely missed. - Judy Cameron, AGV State Secretary ____________________________ FROM A FRIEND: [Colin Smith, a member of the AGV for 20 years & the partys official archivist, wrote the following letter to Chriss daughter, Miyuki Mardon, quoted verbatim, with permission.] Dear Miyuki, I am very sorry to hear your sad news. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Chris was a man of great intelligence and enormous dedication to the promotion of a green economy and industry and alerting people to the threat of global warming. He was active in that regard long before there was a Greens party in Victoria, and I believe a foundation member of Greens Victoria - certainly a very early member. He always gave 100% - not only to the jobs for which his expertise was so valuable, but also for chores like handing out how-to-vote cards at early-voting booths and managing the branch bank account and serving as a returning officer in internal elections. You can be very proud of your father and his achievements in science and engineering and in communicating scientific and technical sense to people on the political front line. It was I think less than a week ago that I heard from him about yet another of the many matters he continued to follow and advise us about. We will miss him greatly. I shall attend the funeral and I am sure that many other members of the Greens will do likewise. I am copying this message on to a number of key members of the party both local, state and national. - Colin Smith
