Chris and I spent a lot of time talking about ALS and the ice bucket challenge that has now raised over 50 million dollars for this very under funded and worthwhile cause. Admittedly, I was not aware of this disease before the ice bucket challenges started to pass through my newsfeed here on Facebook, but it was through this challenge that I became aware and learned what a serious and deadly disease ALS is. When I told Chris I had been challenged, he was more than happy to jump on board. He knew more about this disease than I did and we enjoyed watching a lot of the videos online. Though this disease reaches much farther than the military community, service members are twice as likely to receive an ASL diagnosis in their lifetime. The reality for Chris, having served for 20 years and having been deployed to war zones on multiple occasions, is that he falls in a greater risk category. In just a matter of months, he too will be among Americas veteran population. For him, its personal. If having a little fun by dumping ice water on our friends and family is what brings awareness, then by all means! If my dear friend asked me to do it for her sweet girl with juvenile diabetes, damn straight I would do it...just as I would do for both of my boys. Whether it annoys people or not is irrelevant...it got your attention and now you know. Point made. Im thankful for this challenge. Long after Chris retires, Ill still have a son serving this country...so it took a little ice water to bring me awareness...but it worked. If another cause close to my heart needs my support, Ill dump slime on my head if I have to. Aside from the fun, there is always the most important matter of doing something good for someone else, even if it doesnt effect you or someone you love. It feels good to give and do for others without any thought of reward or recognition. There are many people giving right now. As it should be. I hope this spirit continues!
