Co-Director of the Editorial Institute at Boston University and Warren Professor of the Humanities, he was formerly a professor of English at the University of Bristol and at Cambridge. He was the Professor of Poetry at Oxford, 2004-2009. His Anthony Hecht Lectures in the Humanities were published by Yale in 2010 as True Friendship: Geoffrey Hill, Anthony Hecht, and Robert Lowell Under the Sign of Eliot and Pound. With Lisa Nemrow and Julie Nemrow, he has edited Bob Dylan, The Lyrics: Since 1962 (to be published by Simon & Schuster in November this year), and with Jim McCue The Poems of T. S.
