Cities V Redballs 4/5/14 Beetson Oval Not even the appearance of former Club legend, Tony Collins, was enough to inspire the Gladiators to victory over the Red Bulls on Sunday. Collins was on hand to present the first grade side with their jerseys and say a few words. Again with six regular first graders unavailable, the Club’s depth was again tested with players having to play out of position. Cities found themselves again unable to complete their first 5 sets of six handing the Bulls easy possession. With the score six nil to the Bulls, Cities were starting to tire on back of doing a mountain of defence when Darryl Parker raced over to score. Dan Murray slotted the conversion and it was locked up at six all. Having weathered the onslaught, Cities managed to get three repeat sets on the Bulls tryline and looked to be rewarded when under 18 halfback Alex Coonan dived over near the posts off a Bulls knock-on but was somehow disallowed the try. With three minutes remaining before halftime the Bulls scored to make it 10-6 at the break. The second half couldn’t have started worse for Cities with second rower Campbell Crouchley being sin-binned in the 44th minute. To Cities credit the Bulls didn’t score a point in that time but the extra defence took its toll and the Bulls scored three more tries until lock Michael Challenor dived over for a consolation try. Parker missed the conversion and the full time score was 28-10 to the Bulls. The Player’s Player was stand-in five-eighth, Willie Clarke who was well supported by Challenor, Parker and prop Dan Lucas. In a good day for the Blue & White, the Under 18’s won in a thriller 32-30 and F Troop won in the dying stages with a gutsy 22-20 victory. U16’s received the 2 points after the Bulls forfeited early in the week. It was disappointing for the young guns as they will not have played a game since April 13 and won’t play until the 25th of May. Next home game is May 18 against Miles.
